NEW YORK, NY: Vital City, the new journal and website dedicated to leading a provocative, civil conversation on public safety and civic well-being in New York City, today announced the addition of Josh Greenman as its managing editor.
Greenman — who is joining Vital City having served nearly 17 years as opinion editor at the Daily News, the last six of which he was also editorial page editor — will continue to be a part of the News’ editorial board, where he will transition to senior contributing member.
“I’m really excited to help Vital City find and publish smart longer-form writing on everything from public safety to education to culture to economics, all with an eye to describing what makes New York City inimitable and challenging it to be better,” said Greenman. “We will showcase social science, personal essays and even fiction to engage readers and offer policymakers pragmatic solutions to bedeviling problems.”
“I am just delighted that Josh is joining Vital City as managing editor,” said Vital City founder Elizabeth Glazer. “Josh has a curious, creative and capacious mind, and will broaden and deepen Vital City’s contributions to solving urban problems. He is a wonderful writer, editor and colleague who has a compelling understanding of the issues confronting cities and an inventiveness and energy that will go a long way to addressing them.”
“I’ve long admired Josh’s work at the Daily News, which has always exhibited a nuanced understanding of a broad range of topics, a great affection for New York, a commitment to clear writing and an openness to good ideas no matter where they come from,” said Vital City founding editor Greg Berman. “In this way, Josh has always embodied the core values of Vital City.”
Vital City has thus far released two print issues, one on gun violence and one on disorder; a series of online missives on the future of Rikers Island; and is building a data hub on topics critical to the public safety of the city.
Greenman’s first official day is January 3, 2023.
